Mobile 2009
for piano solo
Duration: variable, ca. 3’
Premiere: Winston Choi, Chicago, May 2011
The “mobiles” are entries in an ongoing series of works, begun in 2003, in which I write a new mobile each year. The two simple rules for the project are: each piece should have a different instrumentation and each piece should manifest a different kind of mobility (i.e., indeterminacy or “openness”).
mobile 2009, for solo piano explores a very straightforward approach to mobile form – the performer is confronted with a number of “panels” to be played in any order. Each panel exhibits a unique initial background pulsation and most of them gradually change speeds, so that linking them can create a variety of smooth or stepped accelerations or decelerations.
The work was premiered by Winston Choi in Chicago, May 2011.
